What fits in a 30-yard dumpster?
A 30-yard dumpster holds about 10 to 13 pickup truck loads of debris, assuming an 8-ft bed loaded level. It is built for large construction sites or home additions. These typical projects fit the 30-yard:
- Framing scrap, packaging and drywall from a home addition
- A full estate cleanout with furniture in every room
- A two-layer roof up to about 15 to 16 squares
- Commercial build-outs and tenant turnovers
Examples are typical, not guaranteed. Your amount of debris decides.
How much weight can a 30-yard dumpster hold?
A 30-yard dumpster includes 4 tons, or 8,000 lb. Framing scrap, packaging and furniture rarely reach that before the box is full. Plaster, tile, wet drywall and shingles can, so load those with the scale in mind. Concrete, dirt and brick are not allowed in this size.
Worked example: your 30-yard includes 4 tons. The landfill scale ticket shows 4.8 tons net. You pay for 0.8 tons at $75 per ton.
Weights in examples are illustrations; check your own shingle bundle wrapper and the scale ticket.
Will a 30-yard dumpster fit my driveway?
A 30-yard dumpster needs a clear, level spot 22 ft long and 8 ft wide. The roll-off truck typically needs about 60 ft of straight approach and about 23 ft of overhead clearance. Our drivers set wooden boards under the rails to protect concrete and asphalt.
Street placement and HOA rules are covered in dumpster placement and driveway care.
Too small or too big?
Guessing too small costs more than guessing too big. An overfilled 30-yard can't travel, and a swap counts as a full new rental. Going one size up costs less than a second haul when the debris is light. Compare the sizes on either side:
- 20-yard: 22 ft long, about 7 to 9 pickup loads, 3 tons included. Pick it if your debris fits in 9 pickup loads or fewer.
- 40-yard: 22 ft long, about 12 to 16 pickup loads, 5 to 6 tons included. Pick it if your light debris could top 13 loads.
See every size together in the dumpster size guide.
How your final bill is worked out
Your 30-yard bill is the quoted rental plus only two possible extras: weight over 4 tons at $75 per ton, and days past 7 at $25 each. The certified scale ticket comes with the final invoice.

What can't go in the dumpster
The 30-yard dumpster takes household junk, furniture, construction and remodel debris and yard waste. Chemicals, wet paint and batteries are not allowed. Mattresses, tires and Freon appliances are $50 each.
Not allowed
- Hazardous chemicals (solvents, pesticides, pool chemicals)
- Wet paint
- Batteries of any kind
Allowed for $50 each
- Refrigerators, freezers and AC units with Freon
- Mattresses
- Automotive tires

30-yard dumpster questions
How much does a 30-yard dumpster hold?
A 30-yard dumpster holds 30 cubic yards, about 10 to 13 pickup truck loads. It is 22 ft long, 8 ft wide and 6 ft high and includes 4 tons and 7 days.
Is a 30-yard dumpster bigger on the ground than a 20-yard?
A 30-yard dumpster takes the same 22 by 8-ft footprint as the 20-yard. The extra space comes from 6-ft walls instead of 4-ft walls, so it needs no more driveway, but loading over a 6-ft wall is harder by hand.
Can I put roofing shingles in a 30-yard dumpster?
Shingles go in a 30-yard dumpster, and it suits two-layer tear-offs. Watch the weight: 4 tons is about 8,000 lb, so a two-layer roof of about 16 squares can reach the limit. Use your bundle weight to check.
Do contractors need a 30-yard for new construction?
A 30-yard dumpster is the usual pick for new construction and additions because framing scrap and packaging are bulky and light. For long builds, schedule swaps; each swap counts as a new rental.
