Roll-off dumpster resting on wood beams beside a house

Guide

Dumpster Placement and Driveway Protection

A dumpster needs a level spot as long as the container (12 to 22 ft) and about 8 ft wide, with about 60 ft of straight truck approach. Our drivers set wooden boards under the rails to protect concrete and asphalt. Street placement usually needs a city permit.

How much space does a dumpster need?

A dumpster needs a level spot as long as the container: 12 ft for a 10-yard, 16 ft for a 15-yard and 22 ft for a 20 or 30-yard, and about 8 ft wide. The roll-off truck typically needs about 60 ft of straight approach to slide it off.

Will a dumpster damage my driveway?

Our drivers place structural wooden boards under the dumpster's steel rollers and rails on every concrete and asphalt driveway. The boards spread the load and stop the steel from cracking or scratching the surface. Avoid brand-new concrete that has not fully cured.

Where should a dumpster not go?

Keep a dumpster off septic tank lids, sprinkler heads, soft lawn, and concrete poured in the last few weeks. Avoid spots under low power lines or tree branches; the truck bed lifts to drop the container. Leave room to open the rear door if you plan to walk debris in.

Can a dumpster go on the street?

A dumpster on a public street or right-of-way usually needs a permit from the city or county, and some require reflectors or cones. Rules differ by city, so check your city page before booking street placement. A driveway avoids that step for most homes.

Does my HOA allow a dumpster in the driveway?

Many HOA communities limit how many days a dumpster can sit in a driveway or require approval first. Master-planned communities around Pearland and Houston commonly have deed restrictions, so check your HOA rules before the delivery date.

What happens if the truck can't place the dumpster?

If the driver arrives and can't drop or pick up the dumpster because of parked cars, low hanging wires or a locked gate, a $125 dry-run fee applies. A dry run is a trip that ends without a drop or pickup. Clear and mark the spot the night before.

Do I need to be home for delivery?

You don't need to be home. The driver sends an automated text or calls 20 to 30 minutes before arrival to confirm placement. Mark the spot with a cone, chalk or a note, and the dumpster goes down there between 7 AM and 5 PM.

Questions renters ask

Can a dumpster go on grass?

A dumpster can go on firm, dry grass, but it may leave ruts, and wet ground can sink under a loaded box. Paved surfaces are safer. Tell us when you book if grass is the only spot.

How close to my garage can the dumpster go?

The dumpster can go close to the garage door as long as the truck has a straight approach and about 23 ft of clearance overhead. Leave space to walk around the container.

Can you place the dumpster in my backyard?

A backyard placement works only if the truck can reach it on firm ground with a straight approach and overhead clearance. Most backyards can't take the truck's weight; the driveway is the usual spot.

Can the dumpster block the sidewalk?

A dumpster that blocks a public sidewalk usually needs the same city permit as a street placement. Keep it on the driveway behind the sidewalk where possible.
