What to Do With Concrete From a Patio Removal

Broken patio concrete goes in a 10-yard or 15-yard dumpster, loaded no higher than halfway. Concrete weighs about 4,000 lb per cubic yard, so a 12 by 12-ft patio 4 inches thick is about 7,111 lb. Keep the load concrete-only for clean-fill pricing.

How much does my patio weigh?

Multiply length by width by thickness in feet to get cubic feet, divide by 27 for cubic yards, then multiply by about 4,000 lb. A 12 by 12-ft patio at 4 inches is 1.8 cubic yards, about 3.6 tons.

Weight basis: typical value for normal-weight concrete, about 145 to 150 lb per cubic foot of solid slab.

Why only half full?

Heavy debris is limited to halfway up the walls because a full box of concrete would exceed highway legal weight. An overloaded dumpster can't travel, so the driver can't take it and a $125 dry-run fee applies.

What makes a load clean?

A clean load is concrete only: no dirt clods, wood forms, trash or bags. Rebar and wire mesh are fine; tell us when you book. Mixed loads are billed as regular debris at $75 per ton over the included weight.

Can I put dirt and concrete together?

Dirt and concrete can share a 10 or 15-yard dumpster, but a mixed load loses clean-fill pricing and is billed as regular debris by weight. Keep each material in its own load when you can, and stop at the halfway line either way.

Sizes: 10-yard dumpster and 15-yard dumpster.

Where should a concrete dumpster sit?

A concrete dumpster belongs on pavement, never on soft lawn, because a loaded box can sink. Our drivers lay wooden boards under the rails, and the truck typically needs about 60 ft of straight approach to set it down.

More: dumpster placement and driveway protection.

Next step: Concrete and dirt dumpster rental.
